KE Members Meet- October 2022

By Luvena Rangel (The Curvy Yogi)

Kanara Entrepreneurs (KE) had a spectacular turnout for their member meet at The Grand Magrath, Bangalore, on Friday, 21st October 2022. Despite the inclement weather, members, member spouses and some guests, arrived with right anticipation. Notably, three virtual members from Mumbai had specially flown in to attend the meeting.

Luvena Rangel (The Curvy Yogi) kickstarted the gathering with a short, energizing chair and laughter yoga session. While the back & neck stretches eased out the exhaustion after a busy week, the giggles and deep belly laughter that followed ensured everyone had their hearts racing a bit faster and also ensured alertness for the rest of the evening.

The meeting commenced with the KE prayer led by KE Member Dr. Antony Pais. KE President, Clarence Pereira next addressed the audience by drawing an interesting parallel between recent world events to his central message – It is never too late to take a new post. He also shared an update on the members’ Turkey trip that was followed by a montage, giving the members a glimpse of the visit.

Vilina Sequeira (Docens Training & HR Consulting Pvt Ltd) shared an update on the KE GenNow activities. She announced the exciting initiative of KE GenNow to launch a new group for the better collaboration for Musicians of KE that will be led by KE Member Anston Rego (Brilliant Printers).

Leena Lobo (Angelina Consultancy Services) shared key steps that KE Women Entrepreneurs have worked on to help the group craft specific events and programs to our women members aligned with the KE vision and mission. Highlighting the group’s chosen theme on ‘Collaboration’, she noted the many initiatives that women members had already taken and announced the upcoming collaborative offering for women entrepreneurs and professionals, ‘The Success Recipe’ a workshop curated and facilitated by KE Members Leena Lobo, Luvena Rangel & Rachana Rego.

After a short table networking activity for members to get to know each other better, KE Director Marketing, Anil Monteiro presented the reach and extent of KE through digital networking via LinkedIn and urged members to take 30 seconds to Like and Share and a further 30 seconds to comment on the post. He also shared an update on the Industry visits that have restarted post pandemic. Anil further highlighted the integral work of KE Director Events, Sunil D’Sa and team and spotlighted the achievements of various KE Members in their respective industries over the past two months.

KE Member Janice Pearl D’Souza held the flow of the October Meet with professional finesse and well placed humour as she seamlessly compered the evening. The event ended with well engaged open networking among members over a sumptuous dinner.

KE GenNow Goes Back to School

By Luvena Rangel (The Curvy Yogi)

Kanara Entrepreneurs (KE) GenNow brought out fond memories reminiscent of school days by hosting their recent member event at St. Joseph’s Boy High School, Bangalore, on Wednesday, 21st September 2022.

Right from the random desk partner selection by picking paired playing cards to the Munchies snack boxes, the vibe of the meetup was one that shouted, ‘SCHOOL’ where class X-E was buzzing with excitement of chalk powder, chit chat, front row studious note-takers and the inevitable back-benchers who had to be sshh-ed every ten minutes. The only thing missing was a teacher walking in to say, ‘Is this a fish market??

After the KE prayer, Anston Rego (Brilliant Printers), deftly led us to a quick ‘Get to know each other’ ice-breaker. Members then proceeded to present one interesting fact about their benchmate. It was surprising to recognize how many musicians and linguists were GenNow members – a few of them knowing more than 8 languages fluently!

KE GenNow took us Back-to-School, not just as a path to nostalgia, but to learn about a key ingredient for professional and business success – Work Life Balance. KE member, Dr. Bevin D’Silva, HoD ER, Sakra World Hospital, shared his experience with balancing his time-consuming career and his passion for music. Enjoying his place in front of the classroom, chalk stick in hand, Dr. Bevin shared a very realistic approach to finding harmony by keeping practicality in mind and not confuse our hobby with essential income generating work. He also highlighted the fact that in key areas of life (Health, Finance, Community, Peace of Mind and Passion) that make us happy, most of us can ideally focus on two areas while one area in this Wheel of Life may end up getting compromised. Health should remain a key focus to enjoy the other aspects of a wholesome life experience. Of course, unless we are firmly established in our business and/or have the financial security to indulge, one needed to ensure that our work was given due priority.

The meet was brought to a close on high with a live music sing-a-long with Rahil Pereira and Anston. Almost everyone in the class lent their voice to numbers ranging from Country, Classics and Old Rock to a tribute to KK and finally with a lively session of Baila and Maria Pitache!

A well-planned, fun networking event organized by the KE GenNow Organizing Team: Eugene Mathias (Firefly Spaces), Neil Rodrigues (The Konkan), Nishan Pereira (Deccan Group of Companies) & Vilina Sequeira (Docens Training & HR Consulting Pvt Ltd). Special thanks to Deon Gomes (Lint Pharmaceuticals) for capturing a crisp video of the evening & Vivek Cornelio (WEconsult) for remotely assisting with the event.

Kanara Entrepreneurs in Turkey (Turkiye)

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Armed with anticipation, excitement and an indelible sense of adventure a group of 46 comprising of KE Members and their families, from Bangalore and Dubai in the age group of 2 to 75 went on an unforgettable trip to present day Turkiye a nation uniquely diverse, vibrant and mystical.

Alluring Antalya

Beginning the trip in Antalya, which is the Turkish Riviera and the gateway to Turkey’s Mediterranean region, the Members experienced the beauty and grandeur of this resort town. Antalya has a turquoise coastline where the sun, sea and sand commune in harmony. The ancient name of Pamphyha which means a land of tribe and races in Greek holds true for present day Antalya which has transformed into a region of culture and sophistication and sits as a crown jewel in Turkey’s must see destinations.

The Members visited the Duden waterfalls, strolled down the Konyaati beach and the old town of Kaleici entering through the iconic Hadrian’s gate. Named after the roman emperor Hadrian, the gate is a symbol of triumph and has three arcades. They strolled down the Marina and enjoyed the sunset on the Riviera. Equally vying for their attention were the plethora of restaurants and bars dotting the Riviera which makes Antalya an international resort town.

Captivating Cappadocia

A short flight away was the next destination Cappadocia, a region having a spectacular fairy tale landscape, cave dwellings, stunning rock formations and a skyline filled with hot air balloons.

The Members were enthralled visiting the Devrent valley, Monk Valley (pasabag), Goreme open air museum and Pigeon Valley. The customary industrial visit to the Aldag  Ceramic workshop  in the Avnos Village was a resounding success with the members getting a first hand experience in the creative and marketing aspects of the establishment. Members who wanted to tick Hot Air Ballooning off their bucket lists were thrilled to have that opportunity in Cappadocia. Nothing can beat the magic and adrenaline rush of soaring high over fairy chimneys in the mystical landscape of Cappadocia while the other balloons dot the skyline like confetti. It was an experience of a lifetime!

Intriguing Istanbul

Straddling between Europe and Asia in the Bosphorus strait is Istanbul which possess a rare and richly complicated heritage passed on from the ancient Ottoman and Byzantine empires rule and embodies culture, history and art like no other city in the World. It is both chaotic and charming at the same time and reminds you of a richly woven tapestry of different hues and designs.

The Members began their tour of Istanbul with a visit to a leather outlet. They were excited to visit the Hagia Sophia Mosque & Museum, Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome. For the unversed, the Hagia Sophia was originally built as a Christian Cathedral and is the epitome of Byzantine architecture. After going through its fair share of political turmoil, today it has been reclassified as a mosque, but remains a major cultural and historical site.

On the Bosphoros Cruise, the Members were filled with joie de vivre and enjoyed the Turkish folk dance and belly dancing while sipping on Turkish Raki and enjoying traditional Turkish cusine.

Retail therapy in Istanbul

The Grand Bazaar is the largest and oldest covered market in the world. It was built in the year 1455 as an edifice to deal in luxury goods. Today ceramics to jewellery, antiques to textiles, carpets to kilims and the famous hanging lamps in various colours are sold here. The labyrinth of shopping alleys around the Grand Bazaar are equally fascinating.  If the Members had a monochromatic shopping list it was quickly put aside on seeing the colourful myriad products on display. Known for their entrepreneurial skills they haggled skilfully with the Turkish merchants and returned with bags filled with souvenirs.

No trip to Istanbul is complete without visiting the Misir Carsisi popularly known as Spice bazaar which is located in the Eminonu quarter next to the Galata Bridge.   Mainly Spices, coffee and teas, Turkish Delights, jewellery, souvenirs and dried fruits are sold here. On entering the bazaar, sweet fragrance wafts through the air and engulfs one in a sweet embrace. Our group not immune to the charm of the sellers and the spices put on a spirited avatar and gleefully rejoiced in striking good bargains.

Taste of Turkish Eclectic Cuisine

Though the traditional Turkish meal begins with meat- full skewers like Adana,Urfa and Tavuk Sis, largely the Turkish cuisine is influenced by Mediterranean, Balkan, Armenian and Georgian cuisine. Members were treated to Kofte (meat balls), Pilaf (Turkish Pulav), Dolma (meat and spiced rice wrapped in grape vine), Manti (Mini Ravioli, flavoured yougurt, salads and various other delicacies. The Turkish sweets namely Baklava, Kunafa , Donduruma( a goat cheese ice cream) and Kazan Dibi (burnt dessert) were relished at  mealtimes ending with  Turkish coffee and Salep.

On Sunday the members attended mass at the Saint Espirit Cathedral. This incredible journey ended with the Members spending time at the Taksim square and shopping on the pedestrian Istildal street. Taksim square is the location of the Republic monument which commemorates the anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. Istidal  street is the most visited street in Istanbul and is flanked by shops, cafes, food joints serving street food, street art and a chance to take a tram ride. The Members were pleasantly surprised to find the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua on this busy shopping street and spent quiet moments reflecting and being grateful for their countless blessings.

All wonderful and beautiful experiences end on a note of nostalgia. After all what we treasure most in this world are not material possessions but people and places, moments and memories, smiles and laughter. In the days ahead when our whimsical minds look back on the week we spent in Turkey reminiscing on this incredible holiday, lasting memories will be created in the realm of travel.

KE marks Independence Day with Ethnic Flair

By Luvena Rangel (The Curvy Yogi)

Kanara Entrepreneurs (KE) marked the momentous 75 years of India’s Independence with a special Gratitude themed Members Meet on Friday, 19th August 2022 at the Grand Magrath, Bangalore. KE GenNow hosted the evening with aplomb and the attending members added a touch of grace and flair by donning their Indian Ethnic best.

The evening took off with an interesting icebreaker of Charades hosted by Neil Rodrigues with volunteers enacting business names. Amidst raucous laughter and good humour over misinterpreted charades, the audience received prizes for guessing the correct business names. Naveen Fernandes walked away with the prize of the Best Actor.

The evening was kept charged by the energetic Emcee, Carol Pereira, who also presented us with the 12 chakras of KE analogous to the 24 spokes of the chakra in the Indian Flag. The 12 chakras of KE were derived from the word, INDEPENDENCE: Inspiration, Nurturing, Diversity of profession, Economic independence, Passion, Expression, Networking, Dream catchers, Endurance, Novel, Charity, and Euphoria.

After Dr. Maria Pramila Dsouza led the KE prayer, KE President, Clarence Pereira addressed the members by drawing the essence from key global events of August – the Commonwealth Games, the election of a woman President of India hailing from a tribal community, the passing of business magnate Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and the Independence Day of India – and making them relevant for KE.

Highlighting the resplendence of the ethnic wear of the gathering, Clarence further noted the following points with some elaboration:

  • To embrace values not just symbols
  • Harmonious coexistence of all faiths
  • Learning the art of disagreement
  • Commitment to diversity
  • Rededication to public morality and not take shortcuts
  • Building trust and relationships
  • Gratitud

Clarence closed his address with the thoughtful words, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

Leena Lobo, proceeded to give an update on the KE Women Entrepreneurs’ latest activities, their success stories at collaboration as well as the adding of more members after the last meeting. Interestingly, collaborative ventures that were showcased were not only between women KE Members but also with members across the group and even internationally truly making the tag, ‘Bold & Beautiful KE Women’ worth its coinage.

James Coelho, Director Memberships, led the solemn oath taking ceremony of 8 new members to KE, while the members in the audience extended their warm support with much applause and cheer to welcome them into the fold.

Nishan Pereira, brilliantly hosted and moderated the fireside chat with Guest of Honour, Olympian, swimmer and Entrepreneur, Nisha Millet of Nisha Millet’s Swimming Academy. Nisha’s candid and humorous sharing of her journey – from childhood swimming lessons to training, school and college, and business management, along with challenges along the way, made for some deep inspiration. The experiences she shared were pertinent to entrepreneurs of all genres where she extolled the virtues and values picked up from sport. Leadership, hard work, teamwork and above all, to never give up. Her words of advice to budding business owners were, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something!”. She also stressed on the importance of mentorship and to remember, with gratitude, those who stayed with you at your lowest.

Our next segment – Business Pitches – with Janice Pearl D’souza (Elemental Life Solutions LLP) and Allwyn Roshan D’souza (Brandwrks Foundry). Both members presented their businesses with style and professionalism. They journeyed through the vision and mission of their products and services and also presented clear asks prior to taking questions and comments from the audience.

Two very special prizes of the evening were adjudged by Lovina Dias (Gene Brides) – the Best Dressed Female member, Carol D’souza (The Mangalorean) who as impeccably dressed in a Coorgi drape and Best Dressed Male member, Nishan Pereira looking elegant and charming in an off-white sherwani. Key criterion of the qualifying process was the display of the KE member’s pin.

Notable achievements of KE Members were highlighted before Eugene Mathias presented Gratitude Expression with member, Noel Fernandes (My Home Painting Solutions) delivering his heartfelt thanks to the various KE members who had supported his business throughout the year. Eugene supplemented the Gratitude theme by inviting members to utilize the special Collaborative Reference cards (conceptualized and created by Allwyn D’Souza). Members were invited to express thanks to members for Ace Alliance.

The evening ended with a specially co-created video of 22 contributions from 15 members saying, ‘Thank you’ for services, business referrals and even extending a hand of friendship during tough times.

KE GenNow orchestrated this meeting with adept finesse – a culmination of organizational skill, optimal task distribution across the core committee and a collaborative effort of volunteers and sponsors to showcase an impeccable event. The leadership, creativity and management skills of the team has been commendable and worth taking note of! Once again, they have exceeded all expectations and set the bar even higher in terms of the quality of the KE Member meets!

Bold & Beautiful KE Women Entrepreneurs Collaborate & Celebrate

The women members of Kanara Entrepreneurs gathered for their second meet on Friday, 22nd July 2022 at Hotel Iris, Bangalore to celebrate the central theme of the evening – Collaboration. Following the KE Prayers led by Lead Member, Reshma Saldanha, Leena Lobo, mentor of the KE Women Entrepreneurs group aptly set the tone for the evening by lauding the members present for being Bold & Beautiful – for having the courage to take on the roller coaster ride of entrepreneurship and for being beautiful inside out through all their relationships and phases in life.

Inspired by the welcome note and encouragement to participate whole heartedly in the meets, KE Member, Laveena D’souza facilitated an enjoyable ice breaker helping everyone get to know each other better by adding a short but memorable professional adjective to their names. It was gratifying for members to have their businesses and work se en, heard and acknowledged.

Our elegant emcee for the evening, KE Member Ranjeeta Greta Chatterjee deftly led us to our Guest Speaker, Cherian Kuruvilla introduce by KE Member, Uma Maheshwari. With over 4 decades of corporate experience and as an eminent coach and business mentor, Cherian succinctly shared powerful insights on the idea of #WeCommerce and Collaboration.

With active audience input, Cherian, delivered key collaborative ideas through mnemonics and prompts. He stressed on the importance of adjusting, adapting and leveraging each others’ strengths to successfully collaborate. Interestingly, he broke down the word, ‘Collaborate’ to include a host of values within it:

CO – Co-create / Compliment / Connect, etc

LAB – Experiment / Innovate / Research, etc

RATE – Celebration

Some key concepts and memory aids that made for a great session takeaway:

  • From the TOP of the head:
    • T – Trust
    • O – Open mindedness
    • P – Presence (Collaborate with someone you look up to professionally)
  • The ABCDs of Collaboration:
    • A – Awareness (build awareness of what you do so and talk about your work)
    • B – Business Networking
    • C – Credibility
    • D – Diversity (Collaborate with different people;. It is a value add, not a threat)
  • Play your CARDS right to build presence:
    • C – Credibility
    • A – Authenticity
    • R – Reliability
    • D – Dependability
    • S – Simplicity / Humility

KE Member, Manish Michael of Siel Blu India and his team energized the gathering with a demo of their adaptive fitness session using balloons as the prop of the day. Activities involved building lung capacity from blowing up the balloon, core strength, dexterity and balance through effective fun that hardly felt like exercise.

The table activity of the evening was prompted by an impromptu collaborative fun project that had initiated in the KE Women Entrepreneurs WhatsApp group a few weeks prior. Our women members came out in high spirits and a giving attitude to offer their services to support a fellow member’s wistful desire for a beautiful wedding. KE Member, Luvena Rangel, the bride in question, skilfully facilitated the ideation to develop a project using the resident businesses at every tables and present their business proposals. Projects that surfaced included an integrated event solution, a stress-free bridal package, a project bearing the initials of the businesses involved as well as one which focused on mental wellness.

Ranjeeta took the next few moments to highlight the achievements of our women members:

  • Janice Pearl D’souza –Accredited as a Professional Facilitator with BYLD
  • Luvena Rangel – Appointed as India Chair for Communication & Advocacy for G100
  • Vilina Sequeira – Honoured by Barkur Association of Bangalore for her contribution in recruitment in the hospitality industry.

Additionally, Laveena D’souza was also acknowledged with a special prize to highlight her contribution towards the meet as the Best Networker Award.

The concluding bit on the agenda was a moment of warmth and gratitude where many women members took the opportunity to express their thanks to other members for both business leads and a listening ear. It is heart-warming to state here that the ripples of those shared words are echoing in the Women Entrepreneurs WhatsApp group even now.

The evening drew to a well timed end with Leena’s closing message urging bonding and inviting more women to join KE. The strong ask for better participation from members in future events also made a resonant impact.

Needless to say, Friday evening was completed with a thorough celebration of collaboration with KE Women Entrepreneurs – a streamlined and focused agenda put together by the Organizing Committee that was well received and much appreciated.

The 4pm sharp start was led with a prayer by Reshma Saldanha, Past Director Mentoring, and followed up with a keynote address by KE President, Clarence Pereira who reiterated the importance of a safe space for women entrepreneurs in KE to freely discuss, or vent, about their unique challenges and concerns and at the same time, be a source of support for each other sharing and celebrating each others’ wins

The agenda of the Meet & Greet beautifully carried the essence of the KE Women Entrepreneurs group tag line – Inspire, Empower & Shine. The objective was initiated with a welcome note from Leena Lobo, Director Mentoring, and followed with a series of interactives designed and facilitated along with her organizing team: Laveena D’Souza, Reshma Saldanha, Rachana Rego & Sabitha Lasrado.

The Musical Arms facilitated by Coreen D’Souza acted as a fun ice-breaker to quickly introduce members to one another, followed by the Memory Game where 5 volunteers had 30 seconds each to correctly identify as many names to faces in the audience as they could. The tempo was maintained by other creative activities like Blinded Self Caricature as well as team games to hold the maximum drops of water on the face of a ₹1 coin and fastest texters’ luck to Wilson Food Products. One, literally, beautiful spot prize was an immediate makeover by Juliet Miranda won by Elizabeth Yorke.

The camaraderie and networking over High Tea successfully brought together members – old and newcomers alike in a spirit of collaborative support. Like one aptly member said, there was active demonstration of fixing each others’ crowns without telling the world it was crooked in the first place!

“A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman.” – Melinda Gates

The group theme – Inspire, Empower & Shine – was driven home by brainstorming that engaged all members in groups to democratically arrive at future KE Women Entrepreneur group meeting objectives, and plans as well as ideas to consistently add considerable value to KE as a whole. The members unanimously agreed to the principle of coming in with an Attitude of Giving as well as finding ways to Start Conversations that may lead to Collaborations.

The KE Bangalore Chapter currently has 51 women members making up just about 15% of the overall membership. Out of these, only 2 are women Lead Members and just 1 woman member on the Board. President Clarence’s leading note shared a vision to not just have more women join KE, but to one day have a woman KE President. The intention seems charged with the powerhouse of women the evening witnessed. The evening concluded at 7pm with the distribution of gifts and prizes, and the encouraging Vote of Thanks delivered by Laveena D’Souza.

“I’ve always believed that one woman’s success can only help another woman’s success.” – Gloria Vanderbilt

The success of the event was made possible only by the active contribution of every member in attendance who added value with their presence, voice and support to each other. Our sincere thanks to all those who came forward to help us make the event full of prizes and surprises.
